Japan has long played an important role in supporting international humanitarian efforts aimed at assisting displaced populations. Contributions from the Government of Japan have helped support refugee communities in several regions, particularly in countries hosting large numbers of displaced people.
A publication by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) highlights Japan’s continued support for Afghan refugees through international cooperation programs.
Japan’s Contribution to Refugee Assistance
According to UNHCR, the Government of Japan provided USD 1.25 million in funding to support programs assisting Afghan refugees in Iran.
This funding supports initiatives designed to improve access to healthcare, education, and livelihood opportunities for refugee communities. These programs aim to help refugees rebuild their lives while also supporting host communities that have welcomed displaced populations for decades.
Education, Livelihoods, and Skills Development
UNHCR notes that part of the funding supports technical and vocational training programs, as well as initiatives that help refugees develop practical skills and participate in economic activities.
Programs such as vocational workshops and small business support enable refugees to contribute positively to the communities where they live. These initiatives also help individuals build the skills necessary to support themselves and their families.
International Responsibility-Sharing
The UNHCR article also highlights the importance of international responsibility-sharing, a principle emphasized in the Global Compact on Refugees, adopted by the United Nations General Assembly in 2018.
Through cooperation between governments, international organizations, and humanitarian institutions, these programs aim to strengthen refugee protection while promoting opportunities for long-term stability and dignity.
Japan’s Leadership in Global Humanitarian Support
Japan has consistently been among the important contributors supporting UNHCR programs for displaced populations around the world.
By supporting education, healthcare access, and livelihood programs, Japan helps ensure that refugees have opportunities to rebuild their lives while contributing positively to the communities that host them.
Such international cooperation demonstrates how governments and humanitarian organizations can work together to promote stability, dignity, and opportunity for displaced populations.
